YAG laser is commonly used in treating fungal nail infections (onychomycosis). This type of laser treatment targets the fungi under the nail with focused light, which works to kill or damage the fungal cells without harming the surrounding tissue.
Process:
1. Preparation: Before the treatment, the nail area is typically cleaned. The patient may be asked to wear protective eyewear to avoid eye damage from the laser.
2. Laser Treatment: The laser is directed onto the infected nail or nails. The Nd:YAG laser emits infrared light, which penetrates the nail to reach the nail bed, where the fungus resides. The heat from the laser is effective at killing the fungal cells, as it targets the fungal cells without harming the surrounding tissue.
3. Duration: Each treatment typically lasts about 15 to 30 minutes depending on the number of nails being treated and the severity of the infection.
How Many Sessions Are Needed?
• Sessions: Most patients require 2-4 sessions spread over 4-6 weeks for optimal results. The exact number of sessions depends on the severity of the infection and the patient’s response to treatment.
• Frequency: Sessions are typically done once every 2-4 weeks.
Aftercare:
1. Post-Treatment Care: After the treatment, there are generally no significant side effects, but patients are often advised to:
• Avoid moisture on the treated area for a few hours.
• Wear breathable footwear.
• Practice good foot hygiene.
2. Nail Care: It’s important to trim nails carefully and avoid trauma to the treated nails.
3. Fungal Prevention: Patients may be advised to continue using antifungal creams or topical treatments to prevent reinfection.
How Long Until Results are Seen?
• Results are not immediate; it can take up to 6-12 months to see noticeable improvements, as new, healthy nails grow out. The treated nails will eventually be replaced by fungus-free nails. In some cases, patients may see improvement after the first few treatments, but full recovery depends on nail regrowth.
How Often Should Patients Return?
• Patients typically come in for treatments every 2-4 weeks during the initial phase of treatment. After completing the recommended treatment sessions, follow-up may be necessary, but it usually depends on how well the infection has responded to the laser therapy.
While laser treatment is effective for many patients, combining it with good foot hygiene and additional antifungal treatments may improve the outcome. Always consult with a healthcare provider to determine the best approach.
